Flotilla are a unique ensemble of saxophonists performing music with a variety of soundworlds: trios and quartets for saxophones, often in unusual combinations, and also including piano or synthesizer. A consort of saxophones, rather than a traditional saxophone quartet.
Flotilla’s all-star cast is Kyle Horch, Naomi Sullivan, Andy Tweed and Alistair Parnell; four highly respected instrumentalists with vast experience in saxophone chamber music, as well as strong individual profiles in solo, orchestral, and commercial music. They began working on this project in 2007, and released this CD recording on the Big Shed Music label in April 2009.

Programme includes works by Elliott Carter, Jan Dismas Zelenka, Edward McGuire, William Sweeney, Liz Johnson, Paul Evernden, and Robert Myers.

Saxtet Urban Groove CD coverTitle: Urban Groove
Artist: Saxtet
Released: April 2002
Catalogue number: Jazzprint JPVP127CD
Price: £10.00

Vibrant but thoughtful, diverse but distinctive, URBAN GROOVE is the distillation of the very best new compositions and arrangements from the five members of Saxtet. Eleven tracks draw on influences as wide-ranging as Ellington and Piazolla, with nods to the World Saxophone Quartet and the Tower of Power. Tango, township, New York street funk and contemporary classical all fuel an eclectic, sophisticated style that reflects both the interests of the individual musicians and their high-energy co-operative composing methods.

The sax sound is suave but gutsy, accordion and clarinets adding their own very special perspective. These forces provide a highly adaptable resource for numbers that range form the mellow-with-attitude (Powerful Tower) to the sweetly melancholy (Broken Promises), from blisteringly tight ensemble work to flying improvisation (Stevie Wonder’s I Wish), and from beautiful arrangements of standards à la Gil Evans to sheer high energy fun (Back to Bat).
