Players of all ages and teachers of the saxophone are welcome.

Delegates should have passed at least grade 5 A.B.

The South West Saxophone Day 2009 was a tremendous success. We were oversubscribed and clearly fulfilled a need for an event like this to happen in the south west of England. We received some very positive feedback afterwards and the constructive comments made by the delegates on how the day could be improved have been fed into this year’s event. Although we have kept the basic structure of the day we feel we have made some improvements to the balance of the day and delegates should find that participating will be even more rewarding.

  • On receiving your application we will place you into a group based on your ability, instrument and age. You are also allocated a room and the tutors will come to you to deliver the workshops and the ensemble coaching.

  • At the 2010 event the tutors will run three workshops:
Improvisation - from the fearful to the fearless
How to play fast - techniques to make your technique burn
Extended techniques - growling, slap tonguing, altissimmo, portamento and more

  • Plus if you are coming as part of a saxophone quartet we have made time for three groups to receive 45 minutes of individual coaching from one of the tutors during the workshop times. Please fill in the relevent part of the booking form to let us know you would like your group to receive coaching. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • As last year delegates can apply for a Masterclass place with Gerard McCrystal. Applicants for this event will be given an open lesson in front of the other delegates. An accompanist from Wells Cathedral School will be available.

  • Refreshments; tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available when you arrive.

  • There will be trade stands from John Packer Ltd for saxophones and accessories and Gillian Greig Music for sheet music.
